Short term actions are urgent in order to ensure a safe and livable future

The updated climate scenarios for the Netherlands, which were published this week in the Klimaatsignaal’21 by the KNMI – Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, emphasize the urgency to address sea level rise . As part of the national ‘Kennisprogramma Zeespiegelstijging’, we explored the spatial consequences of different development directions for the long-term sea level rise. The developed research-by-design maps clearly show the urgency of short term actions in order to ensure a safe and livable future.

Final presentation of our Nature Based Solutions study for Kigali

What is the potential of nature based solutions to reduce floodrisk in Kigali and how can nbs be implemented in different types of urban areas of the city? These questions were answered in today’s final presentation of our NBS study, where we presented the final results to The World Bank, the City of Kigali and different stakeholders of the Government of Rwanda and the Rwanda Urban Upgrading Project II (RUDP-II).

The final report with the results of the study will be available soon!

New project: Port of Zwolle

What could a circular and climate-adaptive inland port area look like? Defacto will use its experience in design research to explore potentials for sustainable development of Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities together with Stec Groep, New Economy and Panteia. The first stakeholder session already resulted in interesting synergies between energy generation, urban mining and logistics. We are looking forward to further cooperation with our partners and other stakeholders in the area of Kampen, Meppel and Zwolle!

Anne Loes Nillesen in podcast

Anne Loes Nillesen in panel discussion about the Sundarbans

Anne Loes Nillesen will be one of the pannellists of the SEARCH Conversation to discuss about the Sundarbans this Saturday, July 3rd, 6:00 pm IST (2:30 pm CET).

The Sundarbans has been on the receiving end of repeated natural disasters. The region has been devastated after being hit by ‘Amphan’ last year and ‘Yass’ this year. Covid, too, added to the misery of people. The unique tenacity of the place while living on the margin for long is being tested frequently. The discussion will address three points: critical issues, significant measures taken so far, and long-term options.

Presenting the first results of our Nature Based Solutions study for Kigali

Wednesday June 2nd Defacto Urbanism will present the first results of the Urban Nature Based Solutions (NBS) study for Kigali, at the Ecoshape Building with nature seminar. This World Bank study (supported by the ACP-EU) focusses on urban NBS that reduce the rainwater runoff while greening the city. Our multidisciplinary team of Defacto Urbanism, Ecorys, HKV, RHDHV, Sher and CGIS developed an integral approach for identifying and selecting suitable NBS. You can register for the session (16:00-17:00 CET) here
