Due to climate change, sea level rise will increase the flood risk of the unbanked areas in the port of Rotterdam. Considering the economic and logistic importance of the port area it is essential to adapt timely in order to (also on the long term) remain a safe and climate robust harbor. Together with the harbor company Rotterdam, we developed and presented different bottom-up climate adaptation interventions for companies within the harbor. Such a proactive flood risk-management approach is characteristic and unique for the Netherlands.

The port of Rotterdam is positioned in a unbanked but elevated area. Under extreme circumstances northwest storms could result in raised water levels of +3 meters or more within one day. If the port area floods their will mainly be economic damage (damage to buildings, equipment, installations or the stagnation of business processes) and a related risk of environmental damage.

The flood risk reduction toolbox can help companies prevent future flood damage. The bottom-up toolbox provides feasible interventions that companies can implement by itself. What type of measure is most suitable for which company depends on several factors, such as the location, the type of company and the value of assets. Door klimaatverandering stijgt de zeespiegel en neemt de kans op overstromingen in de Rotterdamse haven toe. Door het grote economische belang en de aanwezigheid van vitale en kwetsbare bedrijven binnen het havengebied is het belangrijk om tijdig rekening te houden met een stijgende zeespiegel en hier maatregelen voor te nemen.

Met de zeespiegelstijging neemt de kans op schade door overstromingen in de tijd toe.

Defacto heeft in opdracht van en samen met het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam, de Gemeente Rotterdam en belanghebbenden en experts gewerkt aan een aanpak per havengebied: de adaptatiestrategieën. Hiermee zorgen we dat alle partijen in de haven op tijd de juiste en kosteneffectieve maatregelen nemen.

Welke maatregel waar en wanneer het meest effectief is, verschilt per gebied of bedrijfsactiviteit. De digitale viewer geeft een overzicht van de mogelijkheden; dit kunnen fysieke maatregelen zijn, zoals lokale verhogingen, maar ook het waterbestendig maken van kwetsbare assets en installaties.
